Networking your beast

The following instructions detail connecting your host to our network. After making these settings, you check your host's IP number (http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/hostdb/) and if your machine has dhcplease in its name then follow the link Request new IP number and fill in the information provided.

DHCP?

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This is the new default way to configure a network client.

All the in networking information is kept on a server (or a number of servers actually :), and the server will provide the client with all its network information when it starts up. DHCP means that the networking infomation for your machine can be kept uptodate by just modifying the server configuration. It makes life easy.

DHCP also means that your notebook can move between places and will automatically configure itself for each place (assuming the site runs DHCP like we do ;).

Network numbers?

You shouldnt need these numbers at all. I urge you to use DHCP all the times so your information is uptodate! But (as of 6/Nov/2000) the network details for our network are:
IP address: Do NOT just pick one! This can cause MAJOR problems
Default Router/gateway: 130.194.169.254
Broadcast addrss: 130.194.169.255
Network mask: 255.255.254.0
DNS server: 130.194.168.1
