How do I network my PC?

Problems with your pc's network? Look here.
PC's are ugly to network. The following are general guidelines, but as usual it hardly ever works this way.

Step: network properties

  1. Right click on network neighhourhood. You will get a menu.
  2. Select Properties.

Step: Verify properties

  1. Verify that you have the components listed below. You should have the following properties at minimum:
    • A network card (the green item 2nd in the list) in this image. NOTE: your network card will probably be different. It depends on the actual hardware plugged into your machine!!!
    • TCP/IP network protocol.
    • File and print sharing for Microsoft networks.
    • Client for Microsoft networks.
If you do not have these, then submit a request to get them added.
  2. Select Client for Microsoft networks as the Primary network login.

Step: TCP/IP properties

  1. Double click on TCP/IP to bring up the menu illustrated.
  2. Verify you are in the IP address window
  3. Select Obtain an IP address automatically

Step: Wins configuration

  1. Goto the WINS Configuration menu
  2. Select Use DHCP for Wins resolution

Step: gateway

  1. Goto the Gateway menu
  2. Clear the settings.
You should not need a gateway. DHCP will provide you with one.

If you feel you really need one then use: 130.194.169.254 Note this change from the screen save (although both addresses will work, 169 is correct and 168 is only an alias).

Step: DNS configuration

  1. Goto the DNS Configuration menu
  2. Select Disable
  3. Click on OK to close the TCP/IP properties window and return to the network properties window.
If you select Disable DNS then DNS is NOT disabled, but is rather loaded from the server that gives you the IP adddress.

I have shown the correct information here anyway, but you will have to change Host to the correct setting for your machine (ie, dont use mapinfo-1). The DNS server is: 130.194.168.1

Step: Microsoft file sharing options

  1. Double click on Client for Microsoft Windows from the Network properties list.
  2. Select Logon to Windows NT domain.
  3. Set the Windows NT Domain to earth
  4. Select Quick Login
  5. Click on ok to close the Client for Microsoft Windows properties window.
Set the NT domain to EARTH with the quick login button set.

Step: Identification

  1. Click on the Identification tab from the network properties window.
  2. Set the Workgroup to earth
  3. Set the Computer Description to something useful including the room number.
  4. Set the Computer Name to something useful such as the function or the user of the computer.

Step: Reboot

  1. Click on the OK Button
  2. Reboot the computer.

Step: Verify

  1. You should be prompted with a box asking for username (your username, EG cameron), password (your password, EG imNOTtelling) and domain (which should be earth).
  2. Enter your username
  3. Enter your password
  4. Verify that you can see earth_server from the network neighhourhood.
Note: You need to have a samba account on kali for this to work. You may have to come and see cameron to get one of these. Get someone who uses a PC to use their account to verify your machine if you dont think you have a samba account.

Step: Confirm

You should now be able to visit: http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/hostdb/ (If that fails you can try: http://130.194.168.8/cgi-bin/ hostdb/) and see your IP number. If it isnt correct or it has dhcplease in the name then you need to request a number.

Step: Failed connection!!!

If any of the steps above has failed, then follow these steps.
  1. Try ping which is the lowest level of networking that I know how to access on a pc.
    • goto the start menu
    • select run
    • enter command
    • in the window that appears, enter ping 130.194.168.1
    • if you get something like: 64 bytes from 130.194.168.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.5 ms then you have low level TCP/IP.
    • If you get something like: request timed out then you dont have low level TCP/IP networking.

substep: if you DIDNT have TCP/IP

You dont have the lowest level of networking, so...
  • Ensure your computer is connected to the network (IE check the cables are connected firmly).
    If not, reconnect them.
  • Check with other people who share your network that there is no current network problem. Ask the people in the surrounding offices on the same side of the hall who are using the same type of cable as you.
    • If you are using the new Blue network cable, check to see that other people on the same floor as you are not having problems.
    • If you are using the old style brown/grey coax network, then....
      • Then check to see that other people using that network on the same floor (and preferably same side of the hall) as you are not having problems.
      • If you are on the ground or 1st floor then check the network box in Kirsten's office has no RED lights on (orange are ok).
If it has red lights, there is a coax network break that must be fixed.
      • If you are on the 2nd floor then check the network box in our machine room has no RED lights on solid.
If it has red lights, there is a coax network break that must be fixed.
  • Try using a differnet network point that you know works (IE try moving the machine to someone else's office that you know works and connect your machine to their network point).
If your machine works now, then you are probably on the blue cable network and your network point is not active. You must contact ITS to get it connected.
  • If your machine still does not work in a network point that you know works for someone else, then....
    • Verify for cables are connected correctly
    • Try swapping components (EG network cable, network adaptor)
    • Re install your operating system

substep: if you had TCP/IP

You have TCP/IP so...
  • start netscape or internet explorer and try accessing: http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/computer/.
If that works then you have networking so it is just file sharing that is broken
  • try using netscape/IE to access: http://130.194.168.8/computer/.
If this works then you have TCP/IP but no DNS. Go and enter your PC's networking details again by following ALL the instructions on this page and making sure that you follow the step labled DNS configuration (should be disabled!) and TCP/IP configuration should be Obtain Automatically).
  • If you verified your settings as above and then rebooted and you can still get 130.194.168.1 but not www.earth.monash.edu.au then Im confused.

substep: Broken file sharing

  • Can you see earth_server in the network neibourhood?
Verify the settings in the page above, especially the Microsoft file sharing options and Identification
  • Can you access earth_server from another working PC?
if not then you probably dont have an earth_server account and you need to get one. Come and see cam.
