How do I network my Mac?

Problems with your mac's network? Look here.

Step: Correct hardware

For the sake of this document, I will assume:
  1. You have an ethernet connecion on your mac.
  2. Your blue cable point is active (IE. you got its to connect it)

Step: Select the ethernet

  1. Goto the Apple Menu
  2. Goto the Control panel
  3. select Network or appletalk.
  4. Switch the network to ethernet.
If this step fails refer to the step Failed connection!!! at the end of this document.

Step: Checking the network

This step must work before any TCP related services (web surfing, reading email) will work.
  1. Goto the Apple Menu
  2. click on "Chooser"
  3. click on 'appleshare'
  4. Verify you see a list of names.
If this step fails refer to the step Failed connection!!! at the end of this document.

Step: Configure TCP/IP

  1. Goto the Control panel
  2. select MACTCP or TCP
  3. Switch the Configure via to DHCP
  4. Click OK then
  5. Restart your computer.

Step: Confirm connection

You should now be able to visit: http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/hostdb/ (If that fails you can try: http://130.194.168.8/cgi-bin/hostdb/) and see your IP number. If it isnt correct or it has dhcplease in the name then you need to request a number.

Step: Failed connection!!!

If any of the steps above has failed, then follow these steps.
  1. Check to you have ethernet selected in your Control Panels menu in the item Network or Appletalk.
  2. Ensure your computer is connected to the network (IE check the cables are connected firmly).
    If not, reconnect them.
  3. Check with other people who share your network that there is no current network problem. Ask the people in the surrounding offices on the same side of the hall who are using the same type of cable as you.
    • If you are using the new Blue network cable, check to see that other people on the same floor as you are not having problems.
    • If you are using the old style brown/grey coax network, then....
      • Then check to see that other people using that network on the same floor (and preferably same side of the hall) as you are not having problems.
      • If you are on the ground or 1st floor then check the network box in Kirsten's office has no RED lights on (orange are ok).
If it has red lights, there is a coax network break that must be fixed.
      • If you are on the 2nd floor then check the network box in our machine room has no RED lights on solid.
If it has red lights, there is a coax network break that must be fixed.
  4. Try using a differnet network point that you know works (IE try moving the machine to someone else's office that you know works and connect your machine to their network point).
If your machine works now, then you are probably on the blue cable network and your network point is not active. You must contact ITS to get it connected.
  5. If your machine still does not work in a network point that you know works for someone else, then....
    • Verify for cables are connected correctly
    • Try swapping components (EG network cable, network adaptor)
    • Re install your operating system
