Netscape: email reading
Email config
Step: Goto the Preferences menu
- Goto the File menu.
- Select the Preferences menu item.
- Click the triangle at the Mail & Newsgroups
category on the left.
Step: Identity
- Select the Identity option from the category
list of the left.
- Your name your real name (EG Cameron
Blackwood)
- Your email address again, hopefully obvious. Look at the example,
where I used my email address, cameron@mail.earth.monash.edu.au.
I do recomend that you use the full mail.earth.monash.edu.au rather than
just earth.monash.edu.au for complex reasons.
Your username should be your username that you use to read email
here. You can also use an alias if you know your alias is valid (for example
I know I can use cameron.blackwood. If you have an alias question
then feel free to ask.
Step: Mail servers
Reading Email internally
- Select the Mail servers menu item.
- Set the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to mail.earth.monash.edu.au
- Delete all incoming mail servers
- Click on add
Reading Email externally
- Select the Mail serves menu item.
- Leave the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server set to to your local ISP's
email server (eg, if you use connect.com.au then your email
server will probably be something like smtp.connect.com.au.
(Your email will be addressed as you because you set up your email address
for outgoing email in the indentity menu). If you do try and use our server
then your email will be refused because out server thinks you are trying to
send SPAM email.
- Leave your local ISP email server if you want. (You probably should ;)
- Click on add
- Select Imap as the server type
- Set the server name to mail.earth.monash.edu.au
- Set the user name to your username.
Step: Setting the default
- Select the mail server you just created mail.earth.monash.edu.au
- Click on Set as Default (You may skip this if you are connecting
from an exteral computer and you dont want earth science to be your default
mail service).
