Netscape is the "Monash Preferred" web/email client. Follow these instructions to set up netscape use the network. You can get netscape from http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/netscape/communicator/

Internet Explorer: Settings

IE settings can be strange, but I think they are documented here

Real audio (.ram)

Real audio needs to be passed through the proxy server for the newer pc's in our department. Instructions can be found at: Real Audio by Proxy

Why a proxy?

For a number of reasons:
  • it saves the department money
  • it allows for use tracking
  • we have to anyway. The computer center is forcing all users to use a proxy anyway.

What is a profile?

A profile is some netscape thing to allow multiple users to share one machine. You can find information about setting up netscape with a profile here.
Details of the operation and maintainance of the web proxy are available for those interested.
