Setting up OSX 10 networking from home ====================================== Note: If you already have a working configuration for your machine, but you want to change the telephone number or other aspects of the configuration, see the 'Creating a new location from an existing one' section at the end of this document First we need to create a new 'location' configuration that the Mac knows about. * -> Location -> Network Preferences * 'Location' dropdown -> New location Enter 'Home - via Monash' as the text (or whatever will make it clear to you later) and press return * 'Show' dropdown -> Active network ports Uncheck everything except the modem you are going to use (usually the internal modem) and click on 'Apply' * 'Show' dropdown -> 'Internal modem' (or whichever modem you're using) * Select the 'TCP/IP' tab * 'Configure' dropdown -> Using PPP * 'DNS Servers' text box: 130.194.168.1 130.194.168.8 * 'Search Domains' text box: earth.monash.edu.au * Click on 'Apply' * Select the 'PPP' tab * 'Service Provider' text box: Monash University * 'Telephone Number' text box: *44 9905 4050 Note: *44 is the Telstra code to 'turn off EasyCall for this call'. Leave it out if you don't have EasyCall or aren't with Telstra. Your provider should have something similar * 'Account Name' text box should be left blank * 'Password' text box should be left blank * Click on the 'PPP Options' button * Set the 'Session Options' as follows ([ ] - unchecked, [*] - checked): [ ] 'Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications' [ ] 'Prompt every __ minutes to maintain connection' [ ] 'Disconnect if idle __ minutes' [*] 'Disconnect when user logs out' [ ] 'Redial if busy' * Set the 'Advanced Options' as follows ([ ] - unchecked, [*] - checked): [*] 'Send PPP Echo' [ ] 'Use TCP header compression' [*] 'Connect using a terminal window (command line)' [ ] 'Verbose logging' * Click on 'OK' * Click on 'Apply' * Select the 'Proxies' tab * Check the 'FTP proxy', 'Web proxy' and 'Secure Web' boxes on the left. * Enter 'proxy.earth.monash.edu.au' and '3128' into the two accompanying text boxes for each field * The 'Bypass proxy settings for these hosts and domains' text box: earth.monash.edu.au * Click on 'Apply' * Select the 'Modem' tab * Set these options as follows ([ ] - unchecked, [*] - checked): [*] 'Sound' [*] 'Wait for dial tone' [*] 'Show modem status on menu bar' Note: The 'wait for dial tone' checkbox may need to be unchecked if you are in an area where the modem does not recognise the dial tone. This may also be the case when you have message-bank or are using a PABX phone line (not a direct line) * 'Dialling' drop down should be set as appropriate, but usually 'Tone' Logging in ========== * -> Location -> Home - via Monash * -> Open Internet Connect * Click the 'connect' button After some modem activity, you should see a blank terminal window appear * Press enter/return You should then see the text 'Annex username:' * Type in your username and press enter/return You should then see the text 'Annex password:' * Type in your password and press enter/return All being well, you should then see 'Permission granted' and 'Earth Sciences:>' * Type 'ppp' and press enter/return After a few seconds, the status in the Internet Connect window will change through 'Authenticating' to 'Connected' at which point you are now connected and you can close the window. Logging out =========== * -> Disconnect Creating a new location from an existing one ============================================ * -> Location -> Network Preferences * 'Location' dropdown -> Edit location ... * Select the location you wish to base your new one on, then click 'Duplicate' * Select your new location (which will be of the form ' Copy') * Click 'Rename' and rename your new location as appopriate. * Click 'Done' Then select your newly created location from the 'Location' drop down menu. Now you can change things to suit Using a new location ==================== Don't forget to switch to your new location by selecting it from -> Location
