QuestionsQ: How do I set up my mac for dialin?A: See below.Q: How do I set up my OSX mac for dialin?A: See osx-ppp-notesQ: How do I set up my PC for dialin?A: See below.Q: I dial in and everything works but I cant surf or check my email?A: You may need to set your DNS server to 130.194.168.1.Try accessing: http://130.194.168.1/. If that works then DNS is your problem (or lack of it). On a mac it should be under 'apple menu', 'TCP/IP', 'DNS server' On a pc it is under the 'control panels', 'network properties', 'TCP/IP dialup adaptor', 'DNS' Q: So we have net access?A: Yes, but it is logged and if you hog it too much then I will be blocking your access. This is a shared resource for checking email and such like.Q: How do I dial in then?A: Because I dont use Mac's or PC's myself I cant give you the magic file to do all the work automatically, but I can lead you through how it works. You can access our modem pool through 9905 4050 which will check all the modems in the pool for a free one. The individual numbers are: 9905 9051, 9905 9050, 9905 4804, 9905 4805 If you get your modem to dial these numbers you will be asked for your username and password. This is your email username (the bit before the @mail.earth.monash.edu.au) and the password you use to read email. One you have logged in to our modems, you will be given and Earth Sciences: prompt. You enter ppp at this prompt and then run ppp on your computer and the programs will work your net connection out for you.
All modern systems have a scripting system that means you can set your computer to automatically log in for you. I dont know how to set these up, I dont use MAC's or PC's. Maybe ask Peter Moulder. |
