Reading EMAIL from outside

Lots of people have asked how to access email from outside 
Monash.

You should be able to follow the instructions at:
  
   http://www.earth.monash.edu.au/computer/primer/email/

which outlines how to set up netscape for reading email from inside or
outside the department.


But I dont use netscape:

Ok, maybe not, but the 'values' should be the same, and they are:

   protocol:  imap
   imap host: mail.earth.monash.edu.au
   smtp host: **YOUR LOCAL MAIL SERVER**
   username:  have a guess...
   password:  your password goes here
   email address:  YOURNAME@mail.earth.monash.edu.au


Why use IMAP!?

Read the bits below 'follow these instructions' on the page above.

IMAP lets you read your email from many places because it stores the
email on the server.


It doesnt work for me!!!

Well it worked fine for me when I tested it. Thus I believe that it 
isnt my fault ;)


When I send email it bounces back

Let me repeat:

   smtp host: **YOUR LOCAL MAIL SERVER**

Our mail server will NOT deliver email for machines outside our
network. So, if you are using optus to log in from home, then you need
to read (IMAP) mail from OUR server, but you need to send (SMTP) mail
through the optus mail server (and you should have those settings
already).


But wont it be named fred@optus?

Not if you set your 'email address' value and the reply to value.
